FAQs

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a daily or on-demand medication strategy that lowers your risk of HIV when taken correctly.

PrEP is recommended for people at higher risk of HIV and anyone with recent STIs, multiple partners, or condomless sex.

When taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of HIV from sex by over 99%.

  • For anal sex (receptive or insertive):
    Protection is reached after 7 consecutive daily doses of PrEP tablets. Studies show adequate protective drug levels in rectal tissue after about one week.
  • For vaginal/front-hole or penile (insertive vaginal) sex:
    Protection requires 21 consecutive daily doses. This longer period is due to slower accumulation of protective drug levels in vaginal and cervical tissues.
  • On-demand (event-based) PrEP:
    For people using PrEP around anal sex only, an alternative “2-1-1” schedule may be used under GP supervision. This involves 2 tablets taken 2–24 hours before sex, 1 tablet 24 hours later, and 1 more tablet 24 hours after that. It is not recommended for vaginal/front-hole sex.
  • Stopping PrEP safely:
    After your last possible exposure, continue taking PrEP for at least 28 days to remain fully protected. Your GP will give personalised advice.

No. PrEP only prevents HIV. Regular STI testing and condom use are still important.

Before prescribing PrEP, your GP will arrange baseline blood and urine tests as recommended by Australian PrEP guidelines:

 

  • HIV test – to confirm you are HIV-negative before starting.
  • Kidney function (creatinine/eGFR) – to check it is safe for you to take PrEP.
  • Hepatitis B screening – to see if you are immune, need vaccination, or have current infection
  • Hepatitis C screening – recommended for people at higher risk.
  • Comprehensive STI screen – including urine, throat, and rectal swabs for gonorrhoea/chlamydia, and a blood test for syphilis.

Every 3 months. A pathology referral will be electronically provided to you at the end of your Forte men’s health GP consultation, this enables you to arrange your next set of testing prior to your follow up consultation.

Yes. Your first consultation with the Forte Men’s Health clinic is Bulk-Billed if you have a valid Medicare card.

Most patients can access PrEP through the PBS at the standard co-payment. Private options are also available.

Yes. You can begin with an online consult, followed by receiving an electronic referral for pathology testing, then once results are available, an online follow up consultation will be arranged to receive a same-day e-prescription or arrangement for the medication to be conveniently delivered to your door.

Most people tolerate PrEP well. Mild nausea or headaches can occur at first. Kidney function must be  monitored at intervals during routine care.

Yes. Your doctor will help you stop and restart safely.

You may need PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis), which is different to PrEP and must be started within 72 hours. Seek urgent care.

Yes, if you are not immune. Your local GP will test and arrange vaccination if needed.

Alcohol is usually fine. Your Forte Men’s Health doctor will check other medications for interactions.
